Oh help me.
How much time do you have?
Because I heart me some television.
I know it is not an admired virtue. I get wide-eyed and more than a little insecure when I come across women who say, "Oh, we don't have a TV in our home." I nod and mumble, "Oh, good for you" while my children pull on my skirt with panicked and confused looks on their faces. I swat them and shush them, but there is a woman inside my brain whose hair just stood on end as she shouted WHAT?? NO TV?? HOW DO THEY LIVE?? and I have to tell her to shhhhhh too so I can hear the TV-free woman proceed to tell me about the fabulous crop of organic strawberries she picked from her backyard that made some heavenly jam which she then delivered to a homeless shelter which counted as a social studies lesson for her eleven homeschooled children.
I love that woman, I admire that woman, parts of me want to be that woman. But as that woman heads off to teach her Christian power yoga class, when I shout, "Don't be tardy for the party!" and she laughs uncomfortably, and then I know, heh heh, that I've won the Coolness Contest.
TV makes you cool. There, I said it.
And I am So. Cool.
Y'all.
And I'll cling to that delusion until they pry my remote control out of my cold dead fingers.
So, where to begin. My favorites. Starting with the reality shows:
1. Judge Judy. Oh, sweet Judge Judy. My first reality addiction, after losing dear Judge Wopner. I admit it is an odd addiction. But a deep one. And a very educational one - I have a post brewing on all I have learned from years of Judge Judy. I've learned a lot. Whew, law have mercy, have I learned a lot.
2. Project Runway: absolutely one of the best shows on TV. So many people I know don't watch this show, and I just can't fathom why. It's like denying yourself a great book. It is probably my husband's favorite show - yes, my husband. My 70-something mom watches Project Runway. (how'd you think I got so cool?) I wish Tim Gunn were my grandpa. Even though that's, um, highly improbable.
3. Top Chef. Again, so many of my friends love cooking, but don't watch Top Chef. Don't be put off by the tattoos or the bleeps (I've worked in the food industry - chefs cuss like sailors chefs.) What those people can do in thirty minutes with three words from a shot machine never ceases to amaze us. Winner prediction: keep your eye on the gorgeous brooding guy, as usual.
4. SuperNanny. I love the SuperNanny, and so do my kids, and I love to say, "If I didn't discipline you, that is exactly how you would behave. Say 'thank you Mommy'." For the most part, I agree with her discipline tactics. Mostly I agree with the fact that she tells children and parents that their behavior is unacceptable. I don't think enough of that goes on these days. Preach on, Jojo.
5. Real Housewives. Okay, I know, it's awful, I know. I know, okay? I know. Educational TV. Truly. Talk about some women who need some Jojo. Don't be tardy for the party (whoa oh oh whoa oh oh) (by the way, I really like Kandi. I could hang with Kandi. So nice to have a normal chick on there.)
6. Flipping Out. I love Jeff Lewis. I can't explain it...I just accept it.
Non-reality:
Before y'all get all on me for Real Housewives (whoa oh oh whoa oh oh) just know that I do now not nor have I ever watched an episode of Grey's Anatomy or Desperate Housewives. And Sex in the City? I tried. It literally made me nauseous.
My point is, we all have our television weaknesses :)
Except for Organic Strawberry Jam lady. She has no television weaknesses, because, you know, she has no TV. Good for her.
1. The Office. Of course. We go way back with The Office - Walker loved the British version and was so excited when it was announced there would be an American version. Yes, he was the Barbara Mandrell of The Office. If you have not gotten into it, please let us convert you by loaning you our DVDs of Season 1, as we have done with so many former naysayers. Watch three of them, and you will be hooked. The Office brings us so much joy. And Walker frequently gets told that he reminds people of Michael, and I never quite know how to take that.
2. Big Love. Oh, we have big love for Big Love. So well written, well acted, feeds our Mormon fascination - what's not to love big? And always leads to interesting conversations regarding the pros and cons of bringing some sister wives into the Naptime household. Plus we love the opening.
Well, gee, that's about it for the non-reality. Huh.
A word about Mad Men - I can't say I love it because I am not caught up. I will, I promise, I will. I do love the clothes. For Walker's birthday last month we had a Mad Men party. I wore pantyhose for the first time since my wedding. That's how devoted I am to someday becoming devoted to it.
And yes, I borrowed that hair bow from my daughter.
My all time favorite show:
1. Drive Thru History, on History Channel International and sometimes in the middle of the night on TBN. This is a wonderful show starring Dave Stotts that looks at history without censoring the Christian influence. It started out as a homeschool curriculum, but then Focus on the Family picked it up and History Channel started showing it. Season 3, The Holy Lands, is in the works. It's funny and informative and well written. Really, really well written, especially the American ones.
And I'm not just saying that because the writer of Season 2 is really hot and snoring in my bed right now.
Okey dokey, your turn. Fess up.
Next week - favorite kids' TV shows.

Now which Voltaggio brother are you calling gorgeous and brooding? Both?
My guilty pleasure is Glee. Not child-friendly, but the music and snarkiness are fun.
Wow. I haven't seen any of those except Drive Thru History which I do love.
My husband and I LOVE Project Runway! I told him if he ever wants to spend a ridiculous amount of frivolous money on me, that I want to spend a day with Tim Gunn. I saw Heidi Klum in Vegas last year. Seriously, if Tim would have been with her I might have gotten arrested! Thank you, Mood!
Nicole
Supernanny....love it! My husband doesn't get it...why do you want to listen to someone's children misbehave? I have to remind him that generally its the parents who have misbehaved and Jo knows how to set 'em straight!
I'm secretly glad my husband travels so I can indulge.
When we lived in England there was a program called House of Tiny Tearaways..don't know if its ever been shown here but Dr. Tonya (you would love love love her) moves 3 families with various childrearing 'issues' into a house and she sorts them all out...My daughter and I never missed this one. Google it...I'm sure it's on the web somewhere.
I wrote about my favorite shows too. I can't stop singing Tardy for the Party too, in a robotic "Kim" voice. You know the one, right?? :)
I am one of Missy's converts to The Office. Thank you so much, Missy, for filling that void in my life that I didn't know I had.
Two of my favorite shows were cancelled way too early: Ed and Life.
LG
My favorite show right now is NCIS, followed closely by GLEE. But last night's very special episode of The Office? Just made me very happy.
Did you know that the English Office is on Cartoon Network? Check your listings for it, but there are all sorts of commercials for it!
I have had to turn off most of TV since kids were born but am excited to tune in to Drive Through History! And please don't tell me you all were here in Philly and didn't mention it! (Oh, wait, I may not have been reading then.) Either way...let us know if you come back!
There are three television obsession in the Russell household: Football, Soccer and Alton Brown.
We have a very simple life.
Dear friend,
You know what a dream Friday night would be for me? Me, you, chips, queso, bevvies, and TV TALK. With the exception of Judge Judy (still a little puzzled on that one), these are all my favorites. Well, also, I haven't ever watched Big Love. It began when we went cable-free and I've never caught up. I have an LDS fascination, too. I think I would big love it.
Every week, Kyle throws a big fit over me taking over the TV for Runway, but you know what? He never misses the runway and judging. Never.
Great picks. Truly.
I LOVE Project Runway. One of the best shows EVER. And if they don't kick off that scraggly headed blonde guy soon I'm going to freak. I can not stand him. But the women totally rock this season. So many of them are good.
We just got our satelite back after a year and a half of having absolutely no tv. (not by choice really, trying to be frugal) And it is so nice!
My main occupation in watching tv is to see old movies on TCM. Love it! and to bounce from Disney channel to Noggin for the kids. But I do have a few normal tendencies...
Project Runway! It does rock! And, I only know one other person who watches it. Glad they managed to get it back on tv, I had heard it wasn't coming back. I missed a whole season there, this one seems pretty good so far.
Top Chef! I love it. I am starting to like it even more than Project Runway. Don't know anyone else who watches it, but they should!
I also like Monk and Psych on USA... and I love Chuck, but have to wait till Feb to have it back. My hubby and I watched the first two seasons on the web.
Oh, I also love anything with the Duggars and I am fascinated by that show "I didn't know I was pregnant" lol
Also: Dirty jobs. I like Mike Rowe!
I secretely love to watch all of the Real Housewives shows too. My fav of the Atlanta girls is also Kandi. I was shocked when her fiance A.J. was killed this week though. So sad for her and his 6 kids. Wonder if they really would have made it down the isle.
We too loan out our DVDs and convert others to watch The Office because it's so great. We also now Community which is stinking hilarious. I am totally addicted to Dancing With the Stars and practically all of Food Network's shows. We also love 24 and Lost but they don't come on until January now.
Oh Missy - I do love Sex and the City! I went to the premiere of the movie for my best friend's bachelorette party a couple of years ago....fell in love with it, and now I've netflix'd all the seasons. Oh yes, we all have our television weaknesses. I guess I just wish mine didn't have sex in the title. Makes me feel a little further away from the organic-strawberry-jam-making-proverbs31-woman....
First of all..seriously?! Walker was a writer on DTH? I LOVE that show! And yes, the American ones are fantastic! I need to get them ALL to show to my kids b/c even though we don't homeschool, they just have to see those shows - they're fantastic!
My other faves...
History Detectives on PBS, Burn Notice, Royal Pains, Eureka, Psych, Sportscenter, Lie to Me, Good Eats and Dirty Jobs. DJ is the only reality show I can handle. I don't know why, but I just can't get into the whole reality show thing. I was a fashion and costume design major - I should totally be into Project Runway. Can't watch it.
TV-free organic strawberry jam lady made me laugh. I can't fathom living with out the TV either!
I try to stick to Jeopardy as my most favorite TV show, and I never was into sitcoms except for good old Bill Cosby, but this spring we moved into an apartment where cable was part of the rent... Needless to say, I've made much less strawberry jam and watched way more trash than I should admit. We found Project Runway and I've been successful in getting the Mister to sit and watch it with me. I've gotta say, my heart about exploded with love for him last night when he predicted before the commercial break (in a very Heidi Klum-esque impersonation) "Epperson, you're out". I thought it was going to be the dark haired white guy for sure.
I lobe me some TV too. Lost, Heroes, all those big names. We're watching the first season of The Office on Netflix online right now. Not sure how we avoided that one for so long.
I also just finished the first season of Desperate Housewives. I'm hooked.
Umm. Love, not lobe. lol :)
I don't watch enough TV to participate this week.
Biggest loser and Glee are the only things I consistently watch.
I don't know when I became a non-tv viewer.
Unfortunately, I am a TV junkie... I blame my husband.
Monday Favs: One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl
Tuesday Favs: NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles
Wednesday Favs: Glee
Thursday Favs: The Office and The Mentalist
We also watch (or DVR): How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Lie to Me, Hell's Kitchen, Survivor, CSI, American Idol (when in season), and Amazing Race.
I am also a HUGE Gilmore Girls fan (I own all seven seasons on DVD), so I watch reruns on ABC Family frequently.
You had me laughing out loud about the organic strawberry jam mom!
"Drive Thru" rocks. Thanks for the honesty!
All that and no Rachel Zoe Project?
I Die.
You totally need to watch "Lost". It will rock your world.
Glee rules!
Reality:
I generally don't watch TV unless my reality-ish shows are on...Dancing with the Stars and Biggest Loser. But recently I've gotten hooked on 18 Kids and Counting, and I haven't shaken my Jon & Kate + 8 addiction, even with all the controversey.
Non-reality:
I'm so glad I can admit to you that I love Big Love. I've always felt guilty about that, but I'm not sure why. And I'm not sure why it was such a draw for me, either. Maybe the LDS thing, like you. Anyway, it's a moot point b/c we only got HBO when our sat. was mixed up and we got it free (maybe that's the guilt trip). I called about it but they never did anything about it. And then the box died. And now I miss Big Love.
And I also somehow picked up Sex in the City, but it was the less-skanky version, so not too intolerable. But after seeing it there, I'm not one who HAS to see the movies or repeats. once was enough.
It feels good to get these things off my chest! Thanks! :)
