The Missy/Pissy Project

Apologies for the Schedule IV in the title.

Several weeks ago, my girlfriends and I all went to see the movie "Julie & Julia" together. You've probably seen it, because most people with ovaries in this country have. If you haven't, you should. Absolutely precious movie.

You wanna know why it was so precious? Because the Julie character was a complete fabrication.

You wanna know how I know this to be so? Because for the past week or so I have been reading the book that the movie was based on, The Julie/Julia Project, written by the Julie of the title. And y'all. Sweet, winsome, adorable Amy Adams she ain't. You bet your boeuf bourguignon she ain't.

Real life Julie - well. Um. Whiney. Kinda boring. Drops a whole lot of Schedule Is, IIs, IIIs, IVs and Vs. Works in any opportunity to declare all Republicans inherently evil, and is royally on my nerves. It's abundantly clear to me why Julia had no desire to meet her.

So why can't I put this wretched book down?

I had this same issue a few months ago with Bret Lott's A Stranger's House. Bret Lott is a great writer and the story was kind of interesting but I really hated the main character. For some of the same reasons I am not enthralled with Julie, come to think of it. I hated the book all the way to page 256. Then I told my mom how much I hated it. She borrowed it, hated it all the way through, and when she was done we had a little chat about how much we hated it.

It's a sickness, I tell you.

I am not the type to commit to any project. My home is full of my fabulous ideas that puttered out. I am halfway through a cross stitched quilt that I began when I first learned I was pregnant - in 2002. It shares a box with a incomplete cross stitch of Mary and Baby Jesus that I started in college. My little office under the stairs contains no less than three wreaths that were abandoned midcircle.

My wedding scrapbook is not quite finished.

And please don't even ask about the baby books.

So why do I develop such a pesky case of sticktoittiveness when it comes to a book, even a book I deplore??

I have about fifty pages left. Here's hoping I finish up tonight so I can be put out of my misery. My neurotic, voluntary, self-induced misery.

I don't have that problem with books but I do with shows. Currently I love Chef Ramsey and He**'s Kitchen. He uses several Schedules but I can't seem to stop watching him. I just love cooking and its intense cooking for sure. The thing is, we don't even have cable tv, or a converter box so I have to look him up on Hulu. It's pathetic really. One of these days I'll stop...LOL

Have a blessed week!

Yes, I am doing the same thing. Heard about the Twilight craze. Read the first. Ok. I had to read the 2nd. Boring. The third, now that was good. I read the first 3 so I have to finish, right? It is ok; but not a page turner, No an "I can't put it down- type of book". Why am I wasting my time? I don't know. I really don't know. I guess it is better than US Magazine (my guilty pleasure!).

I used to be the same way, but recently have decided life is too short to be wasted on bad books. i feel so liberated:-)

Heard the exact same comments about that book from a friend, by the way, so I am going to just see the movie and skip the book!

I actually read this book. Before the movie! That never happens to me. But I am so with you on this. Julie totally disgusted me, but I had to find out what happened.

What was really funny to me was I heard a review from a family friendly site that said it was a great movie, but they threw in a couple of cuss words to get a stronger rating and thus more viewers. I screamed at the radio, "No they didn't! They cut out most of the cuss words to get a lower rating!!"

It's because you keep hoping that the end will somehow redeem the whole thing. And if you don't read to the end you will never know. Because I know you won't even consider skipping to the last page just to peek.

That is about the same reason that I can't read Anne Lamott anymore. She's so painfully liberal that I just can't get past the other stuff.

And I'm so with you on the pettered out projects. Even my dog would tell you so.

I loathe a whiny protagonist! I have to deprogram three little whiners every day, so I don't want to waste time reading about one. :o) And a grown-up should've been deprogrammed long ago!

I read The da Vinci Code and regretted it (not because of the anti-Christian content, but because it was so badly written!)

I love to read, but am def a quitter. If it doesn't grab me, on my shelf it will sit only to be picked up again when I have nothing better to read. I actually wish I was more stick to it b/c there are some books that I have heard such raving reviews that I have tried multiple times to read and just can't get into them.

Haven't seen the movie... but really want to... cheap self that I am, waiting for it to come to Redbox.

I'm so glad I read this post...I've been debating since I saw the movie about reading the book and now I know I should just leave it alone...

Even though I enjoyed the movie, I had the hardest time endorsing it when people asked me if they should see it because of the 2 stupid political jabs at republicans...ruined the whole thing for me! HA:)

I used to be like that. I would struggle through a book no matter how much I hated it. I think I caught that bug from my college English classes. Nowadays though, I figure there's too many books out there. If I don't like it, it's okay to move on.

My husband also has an issue with half-finished projects. No matter what it is, he can find a way not to finish it. If he mows the lawn, he won't put the lawn mower away, it'll sit in the middle of the driveway for ages. Sometimes it's funny, othertimes not so much.

I like your blog. I'm now following and look forward to reading more.

I have the SAME disease. If you find out the name for it, can you let me know??
I did the exact same thing with that book. I just figured that the movie would be just like it and have never seen it. Now, I may, just to slightly redeem my view of the book.
I started reading "My Sister's Keeper", b/c I saw the movie pre-views, and it looked sweet. Boy was I surprised when I started reading. I haven't seen that one yet, either.
My husband LOVES to give me grief about all of my unfinished cross stitch projects, except he usually mis-identifies them and makes me mad! ;) He keeps saying I started a Christmas Tree SKIRT, but it was really just a STOCKING. Big difference. At least to me. ;)
